FERROL’S BEACHES AND CAPE PRIOR
- We recommend arriving early in Ferrol and then going to the BTT Ferrolterramountain bike centre (in Esmelle, with access from the motorway towards the outer harbour, or Porto Exterior) and then taking one of the most spectacular guided bike tours: “Route to Cape Prior” or “Route of the Observation Points”, with views of the beaches of Covas: Ponzos, Santa Comba and San Xurxo. The outing lasts between 3 to 4 hours. The most adventurous can round off the experience with a flight in a two-seater paraglider from the slopes of the Covas hills. Then, continuing south, towards Doniños, there is another beautiful beach with fine sand and dunes. One can drive from one end of the beach to the other, passing by the lagoon with the same name and, from Penencia, continue up to the Monte Ventoso, with breathtaking views of the whole ensemble. From there, we can go down towards San Cristovo and San Filipe, where in addition to the picturesque fishermen’s village, we can also visit the San Filipe Castle bordering the estuary, facing the A Palma Castle. Nothing beats a meal with fresh fish at one of the village taverns, or a lovely seafood dinner at Cetárea. We continue to the centre of Ferrol for accommodation at theHotel Carrís Almirante, in the heart of the Magdalena quarter.
BEACHES OF VALDOVIÑO AND LIGHTHOUSE OF MEIRÁS
- Breakfast and early start for Meirás to visit the lighthouse of A Frouxeira, with its tunnels and cliffs.
- Several boardwalks lead to the wildest part of the beach of A Frouxeira (Valdoviño). Returning to the main road, we will cross the village and take the coastal road towards the observation point of Miradoiro do Paraño before reaching Pantín, with a beautiful view from above. You can surf at this beach or, if you have never surfed, take 1st wave surfing lessons (optional activity). Towards evening the beach of Vilarrube awaits us, together with dinner at one of its taverns. We can book a table for you at the Taberna O Puntal in Vilarrube so that you can taste its famous tortilla (omelette) together with delicacies from the sea, or at the Restaurante Badulaque, in the port of Cedeira, to savour a genuine seafood cocktail. Our journey continues to theHotel Herbeira in the outskirts of Cedeira and with incredible views of the estuary. Accommodation.
CEDEIRA: PUNTA CANDIEIRA LIGHTHOUSE AND SERRA DA CAPELADA MOUNTAIN RANGE
- Breakfast. We cross the bridge to enter the town of Cedeira. Its small but well preserved old quarter invites us to take a stroll along the narrow streets and even stop for coffee at one of the sidewalk cafés overlooking the estuary. We will then continue on towards the Punta Candieira lighthouse. A sign points towards the chapel of Santo Antón and the amazing views of the whole estuary well deserve taking this small detour. We backtrack to the road that leads to the lighthouse. We have to park the car before the hairpin descent, and then continue on foot. The wild horses, cows and goats that can be seen along the way reveal that we are at the gateway to the Serra da Capelada mountain range. We suggest having lunch at the only restaurant that is located at the top, the Restaurante Calzada Romana, with lovely south-facing views, and then in the afternoon visit the village and church of Santo André de Teixido. By doing so you will comply with the legend that says one must visit it during one’s lifetime, but remember to leave a stone on a “milladoiro” (stone mounds) as proof of your journey. Once inside the sanctuary you can make a wish, light a candle and go to the fountain with the three spouts to check your luck. Do not be surprised if you are offered the “herba de namorar” (“lover’s grass” that is actually sea thrift), which grows on the cliffs and works miracles in love matters. If you want to take a keepsake with you, nothing beats the colourful painted figures made from bread dough (they are actually amulets). The village of Santo André will not disappoint you, but we need to make some haste in order to finish the route, which ends at the cliff of Vixía da Herbeira. Dusk may have fallen by now and this will make the moment even more magical. On windy days you will have to seek shelter inside the stone hut so as not to “be blown away by the wind” but the memory will still be a beautiful one that you may always return to.
